Why Your Spray Tan Looks Better With Prep
A spray tan is one of those services that looks effortless when it's done well and obviously off when it isn't. The difference between a result that looks natural and glowy and one that looks patchy or fades unevenly almost always comes down to what happened before the appointment, not during it.
At Rooted & Rogue in Spokane, WA, spray tans are part of our full-service beauty offering, and prep is the conversation we have with every client before their first appointment. Here's what actually makes a difference.
Your Skin Going In Matters More Than You Think
A spray tan solution is applied to the surface of your skin, which means the condition of that surface affects everything about how the result looks and how long it lasts. Dry, flaky, or uneven skin texture creates an uneven canvas, and no amount of skilled application fully compensates for that.
The most important thing you can do before a spray tan is exfoliate. A good full-body exfoliation two to three days before your appointment removes the dead skin cells that would otherwise absorb solution unevenly and shed quickly, taking your tan with them. Pay extra attention to drier areas like knees, elbows, ankles, and wrists where skin tends to be rougher and more absorbent.
Avoid oil-based exfoliants or body scrubs right before your appointment though. Oil creates a barrier on the skin that interferes with how the solution absorbs. A simple physical exfoliant with no oils in the formula is the right call in the day or two leading up to your tan.
Shave and Wax Before, Not After
If you shave or wax regularly, timing matters. Shaving or waxing after a spray tan removes the solution along with the hair, which creates light patches and uneven fading.
Shave at least 24 hours before your spray tan appointment. This gives the skin time to settle and any minor irritation to calm down before solution is applied. Freshly shaved skin can be more porous and reactive, which sometimes leads to the tan absorbing darker in those areas if you shave right before.
Waxing should ideally happen 24 to 48 hours before your appointment for the same reason. Waxed skin is more open and sensitive immediately after the service and a little recovery time leads to a smoother, more even result.
Come In With Clean, Product-Free Skin
On the day of your appointment, come in with clean skin and nothing on it. No lotion, no deodorant, no perfume, no makeup. All of these create a barrier between the solution and your skin and will affect how evenly the tan develops.
Shower before you come in but skip the moisturizing body wash and definitely skip the body oil. A simple, fragrance-free cleanser is all you need. The goal is bare, clean skin that's ready to absorb the solution evenly.
At Rooted & Rogue, we'll do a quick check before your appointment starts to make sure your skin is in the right condition. If you've accidentally applied lotion or forgotten to exfoliate, we'd rather know before we start than discover it in the results.
What to Wear to Your Appointment
Loose, dark clothing is the right call for a spray tan appointment. Tight waistbands, bra straps, and fitted sleeves can all rub against the solution before it has fully set and leave lines or light patches in the finished result.
Dark clothing matters because even after the solution has dried, there can be some transfer onto fabric in the first few hours. Wearing something you don't mind potentially getting a little color on is just good practice.
Flip flops are ideal footwear. Anything that covers the tops of your feet will leave marks in the tan during that initial setting period.
The Hours After Your Appointment
What you do in the first several hours after your spray tan is just as important as what you did before it. The solution needs time to fully develop, and disrupting that process affects the final result.
Avoid sweating, getting wet, or anything that will make you hot and damp in the first several hours after your tan. That means no workouts, no hot showers, no saunas, and no rain if you can help it. Moisture during the development window causes streaking and uneven color.
When you do shower for the first time after your tan, use lukewarm water and a gentle, sulfate-free body wash. Hot water and harsh cleansers break down the tan faster than necessary. Pat dry rather than rubbing, and moisturize right after every shower going forward to extend the life of your color.
FAQ
How far in advance should I exfoliate before a spray tan? Two to three days before your appointment is ideal. This gives your skin time to recover from exfoliation while still being smooth and fresh for the tan.
Can I shave the day of my spray tan appointment? We recommend shaving at least 24 hours before. Freshly shaved skin can absorb solution unevenly and lead to patchy results.
How long does a spray tan last? With good prep and proper aftercare, most spray tans last seven to ten days. Moisturizing daily and avoiding long hot showers extends the life of your color significantly.
What if I have a special event coming up? When should I book? Book your spray tan two to three days before your event. This gives the tan time to fully develop and any initial darkness to settle into its true color before the big day.
Do spray tans look natural? A well-prepped, well-applied spray tan looks genuinely natural. The key is matching the right solution depth to your skin tone and starting with a properly prepared canvas. We talk through both at your appointment.
